MEDIA ARTS

'Media Arts' is a definition which encompasses a wide range of technical and artistic skills. At one extreme it may involve the traditional alchemy of of the darkroom, understanding the play of light and the arrangement of form. At another extreme it may involve manipulation of images with computers, the capturing and editing of moving image and the coding of interactive animation. Throw into the mix almost anything else of a visual, aural, written or hand created nature and you start to understand 'Media Arts'.
Whilst we have no 'Media Arts' subject as such in the high school, we offer a broad range of component subjects areas. In the junior high school these may be taught as full class subjects or broken down into individual skills areas in the elective program. Subjects include Music, Design & Technology, Visual Arts, Photography, Film Making Skills, Drama, Sculpture, Website and Internet skills & Animation. In the senior high school a range of HSC subjects allow students to specialise in areas of interest at a higher level preparing for industry or further education.
High School Teachers Mark Fuller and Peter Harris have an industry background in Media Arts, and over the past six years have helped the students devlop their skills to a level where Faculty Heads of Universities have praised our students work
Mark and Peter work to inspire young people, so that they are able to use the contemporary tools of their generation to explore and gain a deep understanding of their journey from teenagers to young adults. A stunning online gallery <www.MediaArtsJournal.com> gives an insight into some of the teaching philisophy of Mark and Peter, who also help and advise other Steiner Schools in this pioneering area, bringing together contemporary technology and traditional forms. The gallery is full of examples of the work of their students. Most of the current selection is work that has been created by young artists during their training at Cape Byron Rudolf Steiner School. Please visit the gallery and enjoy the work of our amazing teenagers.
